Fractal Noise

Ridges: Granularity & Roughness

When rendering a ridge, detail is added to the ridge by appying 'patches' of fractal noise. Granularity (gran) and roughness (rough) are the two main factors used to create the patches. Large granularity results in a chunkier ridge. Roughness affects the amount of variation within the patch. Low rough values result in smoother surfaces while large values result in very craggy surfaces.
